Cuesta Arriba Tango Club

Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba

One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life: cuesta abajo (downwards) in Gardel's famous song, or more forcefully, bajofondo: down to the bottom, a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda (the final binge), and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club

Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics! So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba - upwards. And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

This month's cds (December 2007):

This month's recommendation:

Francisco Canaro: La Cumparsita - Tango Argentino (26 Original Mono Recordings 1935-1940)

A stunning album of Canaro recordings from the late 1930s, most featuring Roberto Maida. Maida is less well remembered than the singer who followed him in Canaro's orchestra, Ernesto Famá, but his tenderness and sensitivity made him a great match for the orchestra on this period - qualities readily apparent on the cd Poema (which we hope to stock soon).

The tracks mostly appear in strict chronological order, except for the opening and closing track.

In this cd we can also hear some of Canaro's experimentation with new rhythms: the irresistible tangón of the opening track - something between a milonga and a tango in feeling - which he reworks in El porteño.

Bajofondo Tango Club: Mar Dulce

For those with a strong preference for electronic music: here's the new cd from Bajofondo Tango Club, Mar Dulce, released just a few months ago. Recorded “live” in the studio, Mar Dulce is more laid back feel than their previous outings and the long list of guests is more international than before: witness names such as Elvis Costello and Nelly Furtado. Best track: the almost meditative Borges y Paraguay

Milongueando con Canaro

Canaro's milongas are some of the most fun! This album surveys his milongas from the 1940s, when his style was a bit lighter, so we don't got his most charming numbers - they are to be found on Bailando tangos, valses y milongas. The flavour of these milongas is more upbeat fun, and it's an enduringly popular cd.

Track list

  1. La puñalada
  2. Flor de arrabal
  3. El chino Pantaleon
  4. Compadre que le va hacer
  5. Vinacho y vinagrillo
  6. El llorón
  7. Por la güella
  8. Los ejes de mi carreta
  9. Pa' que lo oigan
  10. Serafín y Julia Paz
  11. Me gusta bailar milonga
  12. Serenata
  13. Oiga rubia
  14. Como pelea de novios
  15. La rumbita candombe
  16. Se dice de mi
  17. Soy un porteño
  18. San Benito de Palermo
  19. Cuando un viejo se enamora
  20. Candombe criollo

Adolfo Berón - La guitarra del tango

Looking for danceable guitar tangos? This is the cd for you.

Adolfo Berón is not really a contemporary artist - he's been making lps for ages. EPSA have finally released one of his lps on cd (hence just ten tracks), although this sounds not to be an lp transfer, but to be taken direct from the master tapes. We can only hope that there will be more in the future.

Now this isn't virtuoso playing - if you want that, you should buy Juanjo "machine gun" Dominguez. But as we know, virtuoso playing is often not the best for dancing, for which we need a clear rhythm. This cd does the trick.

Track list

  1. La mariposa
  2. La puñalada milonga
  3. La uruguayita vals
  4. Quema esas cartas
  5. El clavelito
  6. Taconeando
  7. Corazón de oro vals
  8. Viejo ciego
  9. Vieni sul mar
  10. Quiero verte una vez más
