Cuesta Arriba
Tango Club
Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba
One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life:
cuesta abajo
(downwards) in Gardel's famous song,
or more forcefully, bajofondo
: down to the bottom,
a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda
(the final binge),
and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club
Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics!
So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba
- upwards.
And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

La Cumparsita - El himno del Río de la plata
EURO 14007
Blimey, how are you going to choose between the first CD and this one? Celebrating 90 years of La Cumparsita, this album gives you 25 versions of this iconic track - although describing it as a hymn is perhaps going a bit far!
The album includes the difficult to find versions of Francisco Lomuto and Astor Piazzolla (oh yes!) the chirpy recording of the orquesta characteristica of Feliciano Brunelli and the incredibly rare original version, Roberto Firpo's 1917 recording.
Quite apart from the music, you'll also be able to bore to your friends about how many versions of La Cumparsita you have (no fibbing now - I know you do).
Track list
- Roberto Firpo (1917)
- Alonso -Minotto (1917)
- Carlos Gardel (1928)
- Francisco Canaro (1929)
- Julio De Caro (1930)

- Osvaldo Fresedo (1943)
- Aníbal Troilo (1944)
- Alfredo De Angelis - recita: Nestor Rodi (1944)
- Francini - Pontier - canta: Alberto Podestá (1946)
- Angel D'Agostino - canta Angel Vargas (1946)
- Feliciano Brunelli (1949)
- Osmar Maderna (1950)

Roberto Firpo - De la Guardia Vieja vol.3
Did you love the album of Firpo's quartet in March? Of course you did. Here's your chance to hear some more. Not as consistent as the first volume, which was cherry picked from his output, but this is still really good stuff.
