Cuesta Arriba
Tango Club
Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba
One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life:
cuesta abajo
(downwards) in Gardel's famous song,
or more forcefully, bajofondo
: down to the bottom,
a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda
(the final binge),
and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club
Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics!
So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba
- upwards.
And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

Juan D'Arienzo - Meta Fierro-Yunta Brava (1939-1940)
BMG 669333
In March 1940, riding the crest of a wave of popularity, D'Arienzo lost his entire orchestra and his singer Alberto Echagüe when pianist Juan Polito left D'Arienzo to set up his own outfit. D'Arienzo persuaded bandoneónista Héctor Varela to put his orchestra at D'Arienzo's disposal, recruited Cayetano Puglisi as violinist, and placed an 18 year old Fulvio Salamanca in the pianist's chair. The new orchestra was even more successful than the old one. Alberto Echagüe is on fire in the last recordings he made with the band for some years. The milongas in particular are so hot, they may burn a hole in your loudspeakers.
This is the third CD in the 15 CD series Homenage Sony BMG: El Rey del Compás 70 Años.

Juan D'Arienzo - sus priméros éxitos 1935-1940 vol.1
BMG 63341
This essential D'Arienzo CD is one of our recommendations for absolute beginners. This is the music from the late 1930s with which he propelled a city to its feet. This cd is stuffed to the gunnels with tangos which are strong and rhythmic without being as fast paced as his 50s sides. As a bonus the cd also contains the killer milonga Milonga vieja milonga which is otherwise quite hard to obtain. Essential stuff.

Francisco Canaro: Roberto Maida canta sus éxitos
Roberto Maida's late 30s sides with Francisco Canaro (that's them on the seminal Poema
) are just wonderful and this CD -
offered in the club before in Spetember 2009 - presents some of their finest work.
Some great stuff including the awesome Milonga criolla - but don't get too excited by the sight of Milonga triste - it's a novelty track that you'll probably play once! All three valses ae delightful, and of the great tangos Mano a mano and El adiós are standouts - the latter in an interpretation that successfully escapes the gravity of Donato's stunning interpretation.
