Cuesta Arriba Tango Club

Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba

One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life: cuesta abajo (downwards) in Gardel's famous song, or more forcefully, bajofondo: down to the bottom, a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda (the final binge), and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club

Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics! So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba - upwards. And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

This month's cds (August 2011):

This month: a fabulous CD of Di Sarli's sextet - but because we offered something similar a couple of years ago which many of you will have, it's CD2. For those of you who already have it: an excellent Canaro CD.

Francisco Canaro - 20 Grandes Éxitos canta: Eduardo Adrián

DBN 473887

There's so much Canaro that it's hard to know what to collect

Today we bring you a wonderful CD of early 40s Canaro with Eduardo Adrián, who joined Canaro after Ernesto Famá and Francisco Amor split to form their own group. The auditions - and this is a detail that always tickles me - were sponsored by Palmolive.

Eduardo Adrián was a tenor but the quality of his intonation makes him sound like a baritone to me. It's a really fine voice and this is much nicer stuff than some of the late Canaro/Famá that we sometimes hear too much of.

The repertoire is interesting too with, for instance, one of the only danceable renditions of El tropero de amor, which is a real country tango

With three very pleasant valses, this is a fine and an unusual Canaro disc that we're confident you'll like.

Tango Collection - Carlos Di Sarli

Tango Collection - Carlos Di Sarli Instrumental 1928-1931

RGS 1653

Wow! A new CD of Carlos Di Sarli's sextet at a bargain price. The quality is so high, I won't even bother naming individual tracks.

These fabulous sides won't be to everyone's taste. Beats me though. I just can't get enough of this period.

For the dedicated collector, there are only a couple of new tracks compared to the the EURO records CD which we offered in April 2009

Despite the title, don't forgot that there is an estribillista (refran singer) on Maldita.
