Cuesta Arriba
Tango Club
Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba
One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life:
cuesta abajo
(downwards) in Gardel's famous song,
or more forcefully, bajofondo
: down to the bottom,
a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda
(the final binge),
and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club
Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics!
So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba
- upwards.
And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

Julio De Caro - Tangos de rompe y raja
RGS 1643
AT LAST! For several years, people have been asking me for a CD of Fresedo's early sextet. Here it is.
This is a completely different Fresedo to the one you think you know. Strong beats and a base that almost growls at times make this just irresistible for dancing. The interpretation of La cachila is astounding, Lorenzo is delightful - you can find something good to say about every track on this CD

Mis Buenos Tangos Queridos - Cacho Tirao
Okay I know this is the least attractive album cover we've ever seen - but the music is good!
Cacho Tirao was the premier Argentine guitar soloist of his generation - not just a player of tangos, but of many genres. It turns out that this album is a reprint of a CD in the series Timeless Tango which I have to confess had a much more attractive cover.
Tirao is playing solo here, which is not what you normally get on guitar albums. Juanjo Dominguez for instance normally plays with three guitars, one of them the larger guitarrón which acts as a sophisticated acoustic bass. This solo work sounds thinner by comparison and for dancing it's mainly the two milongas that will really grab you, especially Corralera and La trampera.
Strictly limited stock!

Ariel Ramírez - Recordando Valses
Polygram 533253
Pianist Ariel Ramírez is a folklore musician, so this CD of tango valses, performed in a light jazz style that's perfect for dancing, comes as a real surprise. Ramírez plays with the accompaniment of a jazz drummer. The whole thing is delightful.
This CD was first printed back in 1996 and if I know anything about this label, the last and final printing was some years ago. We offered this in the club in December 2009 and July 2010, running out of stock each time. We have managed to get hold of some more - strictly whilst stocks last!

Carlos Garcia - Tangos en piano
Melopea 5022
I will never forget hearing this music for the first time. I was in Istanbul, where a turkish friend with a deep understanding of music had somehow discovered it. As we drove to the milonga he played me Shusheta and Viviani.
Volume 1 is really García's second album of piano solos, being recorded in 1991. His style has developed from the 1963 album, with more fire in the elaborated bass that link his delicate phrasing in the upper register. Listening to it I wonder how Carlos Di Sarli would sound playing solo.
Twelve tracks may not sound like very many but will leave you more than satisifed. This is playing of the very highest class - and you can dance to it as well. Simply a must.
Track list
- Galleguita
- Color de rosa
- Aquel tapado de armiño
- Loca bohemia
- Ojos negros
- Patotero sentimental
- La cieguita
- La casita de mis viejos
- Viviani
- Anoche a los dos
- Dos lunares
- Shusheta
