Aníbal Troilo en RCA Victor

In 2005, BMG decided to rework its extensive Troilo catalogue into a new series of multimedia CDs. The new albums are loosely modelled on the previous LP re-issues of the 1970s, featuring the original album artwork of this time.

These are multimedia cds - pop them in to your computer to look at newspaper cuttings and photographs from the period, or to see the lyrics.

Another box of jewels. La tablada is superb: a rich arrangement, and soulful, delicate playing from Troilo, who for once allows himself a bandoneón solo. Fiorentino's singing, for instance on El encopao, is just amazing.

Beautiful tracks, with Marino really showing why he suits this slower pace. Tres amigos, La vi llegar and Después are classics, whilst Chiqué - a Piazzolla arrangement - shows just why Piazzolla's arrangements were pushing the boundaires of the time. The milonga El desafio is delightful and, mysteriously, seldom heard. A must.

Fiorentino left Troilo at the end of March 1944 to pursue a solo career. It took Troilo six months to find a replacement: Floreal Ruiz, whom he poached from De Angelis. His first recording with Troilo was Marioneta, a song he brought with him, and a comparison of the two versions is intriguing: both danceable, the voice equally fine in both interpretations, but Troilo's interpretation has more colour, and a subtlety that we don't find with De Angelis's simpler treatment. In Marino and Ruíz, Troilo has the best partnership for the more sophisticated music now developing.

Yet again superb. Canaro's version of Adiós pampa mía with Nelly Omar may be wonderful, but this is better. But I can't make up my mind about Milonga triste, which features a chorus of mixed (male and female) voices underscoring Marino's vocals.

Quite unexpected is the symphonic piece Recuerdos de bohemia which closes the album. This is certainly not for dancing. For much of its five minutes, the strings carry the music alone in a manner quite uncharacteristic of Troilo. It is at the same time a wonderful experiment and the prefiguring of the end of tango as a dance music.
