Welcome to our Tango Music Club!
Nothing improves your dancing so much as a good feeling for the special qualities of tango music. The idea of the club was to help you build a library of good tango music, tailored to your own tastes.
The club ran for 8 years, from December 2008 to December 2015, but was forced to close because of the reducing supply of tango CDs, itself a consequence of on-line listening (youtube and spotify) and of course copying.

Francisco Canaro - Instrumentales de Colección
EMI 473886
A really nice and overlooked Canaro instrumental album, with great versions of El chamuyo Charamusca and the vals Noches de amor, although as usual this has a tiny amount of the introduction chopped off. (Don't worry, unless you have heard the transfers from Japan, you won't notice).
Reliquias porteñas is not the milonga put a pot-pourri of eleven famous tangos mixed together.

Juan D'Arienzo - Tango for Export vol.2
ECD 1037
When stereo recording arrived in Argentina in 1963 the Golden Age of Tango was over, and so the executives at RCA decided to record a series of albums aimed at the overseas market entitled Tango for Export. Troilo recorded an album with this title, but the first album was offered to D'Arienzo who recorded four in all. These were reprinted over three CDs. Thanks to a price reduction by BMG (very much against the grain of recent events - everything else has gone up) we are able to offer it to you as part of our club.
This era is generally dismissed as having little on offer for the dancer,
which is understandable when so few people were dancing.
Troilo's work is sounding more and more like concert music.
D'Arienzo's vocal work is veering towards the camp, but with his instrumentals he maintains the line that he has had from the beginning.
The performances are even more extrovert than those from the 1950s, if that were possible.
Purists condemn this music as kitsch, even a pastiche of his former work
,
but put those criticisms to one side and one discovers a music that is more humorous than before in sparkling sound quality.
I think this is a cracking CD, and definitely danceable. The performances are from 1966 and 1967.

Edmundo Rivero - Amigos Que Yo Quiero
DK 15026
My research in to Troilo led me to this CD of Edmundo Rivero, which like last month's offering contains recordings from on the TK label in the years 1954 - 1957. These are again split between recordings with guitars (the majority) or with a backing orchestra. This was directed either by Victor Buchino, who worked as the leader of the house orchestra for TK, or later by Carlos Figari (formerly Troilo's pianist). I've identified these for you in the list below. Some of these recordings are sometimes misidentified as "lost" recordings with Troilo - don't be fooled.
Despite the overlap with last month's disc, I'd still recommend this to any lover of tango song for the quality of the performances.
Track list
- Amigos que yo quiero
- Qué risa!
- Guapo y varón
- Oración rante
- Mis consejos
- Amurado
- Muriéndome de amor
- Tessa vals
- Canchero
- Quién sino tú
Accompaniment:
- guitars (1-5,9)
- orchestra directed by Carlos Figari (6,7,8)
- orchestra directed by Victor Buchino (10)
